FOREWORD

The following text was written around 1991 by Maurice Gross. It describes research carried out in the few years before then, and perspectives for further research, by an informal group of laboratories of linguistics and computer science. That work pioneered the construction of lexical databases and grammar rules, which have been largely exploited for language processing ever since.
